St. Michael the Archangel Parish was founded as a mission church of St. Joseph’s Parish in South Troy, where the cornerstone of the original Church (on Stow Avenue) was laid in 1872. Jesuit Fathers staffed the new parish, remaining a mission church until 1888 when it was transferred to the care of the diocese of Albany. St. Michael’s School was built in 1887 and was served by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The school was forced to close in 1943 because of the shortage of fuel during World War II.
The parish flourished with activity through the years. In 1978, a terrible fire destroyed the original Church, and the decision was made to build a new church in North Greenbush on Williams Rd. During the several years of construction, parishioners attended Mass in the gym of LaSalle Institute located just across the street. In 1980, the new Church was completed, but quickly outgrew its space! Within five years, the church was renovated to add more seating to accommodate the growing numbers of parishioners. Just a few years later, a wing was added with two floors and seven classrooms for Faith Formation classes. Lastly, an office wing was added to the front of the building in 2000.
St. Michael’s Parish endeavors to be a Welcoming Parish to all who come to worship with us and parishioners are actively involved in the many parish ministries, including Faith Formation, Christian Service, Women’s Guild and Men’s Club, Evangelization, Pastoral Care, Prayer and Worship, as well as administrative committees including Finance, Building and Grounds and Pastoral Council.
Our Interim Sacramental Minister is Father Timothy Ennis, O'Carm, who shepherds both St Michael the Archangel in Troy, and St Jude the Apostle Parish and School in Wynantskill. He is assisted at St. Michael's by our Pastor Emeritus, Father James Mackey, Deacon Bob Sweeney and Deacon Nick Ascioti. We are so grateful to have these dedicated servants of God, along with the many, many lay volunteers, who ensures our parish community continues to flourish.
